How To Choose the Right Floor Plan for You

Posted on September 7, 2022

As you’re looking over floor plan options, here are some questions to ask yourself to help you choose the right one for your retirement lifestyle.

How much space will you need?

Bigger isn’t always better. Take some time to think about what rooms in your current home you use the most, and which ones you don’t. Having a spare bedroom is nice, but if it only gets used a few times a year, is it really worth having? How often do you use your dining room?

The majority of seniors find they’re using a fraction of our current living spaces on a regular basis. As you’re deciding between a one- and two-bedroom floor plan, for example, consider how often that extra bedroom will be used. If you won’t be using it very often, perhaps the one-bedroom layout would work best.

What are your must-haves?

That being said, if you do need that second bedroom for a workspace or another reason, make that a must-have. We all have “can’t compromise on this” features when it comes to our homes, whether it’s a kitchen large enough to cook a feast, lots of natural light or a balcony with a scenic view. Choose a floor plan that doesn’t just fit your life but also enhances it.

How much storage space do you need?

Downsizing from your current home to a senior apartment doesn’t mean you must get rid of all your worldly possessions. Older adults have accumulated a lifetime of treasures and should look for an independent living floor plan that allows them to store the items that are most important. Some communities offer garages and storage spaces for individuals who have items that don’t need to be on display every day but still should be easily accessible (e.g., your favorite seasonal decor, spare chairs for guests or family heirlooms that are used for special occasions).

What does the community offer?

The plethora of services and amenities available on campus means that you’re able to get rid of quite a few things you won’t need anymore. You won’t need a treadmill because you’ll have access to a full-service fitness center. You also won’t need to lug yard tools with you because your new living space is maintenance-free. And you won’t need to shuffle heavy, space-hogging books because you’ll have a library on site. Looking at the “big picture” of what’s available to you will better help you understand just what you need in a floor plan.
