Keep the Memories: Make Room for What Comes Next
There is a box in almost every attic, basement or closet that we are afraid to open.
Inside might be photographs, old letters, a child’s first pair of shoes, holiday decorations, a wedding gift or something that belonged to a parent. We know what is in the box. Yet we cannot bring ourselves to let it go. Because the box is not really a box. It is a memory. And that in a nutshell is why downsizing can be so difficult.
Recently, The Highlands at Wyomissing welcomed nationally recognized downsizing expert Matt Paxton, host of Legacy List with Matt Paxton and author of Keep the Memories, Lose the Stuff. His message offered more than advice about cleaning out a home. It invited us to think differently about what we keep and why we keep it.
For most of us, a lifetime of memories has accumulated one possession at a time: the dining room table where Thanksgiving was celebrated, the furniture inherited from a parent, children’s artwork, boxes that followed us from one home to another.
Our homes become museums of our lives, and there is something beautiful about that, yet sometimes, the things we keep can also keep us from moving forward. The thought of sorting through decades of belongings can make a move feel impossible. We know a retirement community could offer less home maintenance, more opportunities, new friendships and greater peace of mind. Yet the idea of leaving our home, and everything in it, can be overwhelming.
Matt Paxton offers a different perspective: Keep the memories. Lose the stuff.
The memory of Christmas morning is not in the decorations. The love for a parent is not in the dresser they left behind. The stories of our children’s childhoods are not dependent upon keeping every school project. We carry those memories with us, and that is an important message for anyone considering a move to The Highlands at Wyomissing® or any retirement community. You do not have to be ready to move or have your house cleaned out. You do not even have to know what comes next. Start with a visit. Take a tour. Walk through a residence. Meet our residents. Have a meal. Ask questions. Imagine what life might look like with fewer responsibilities and more freedom.
At The Highlands, we understand that downsizing is about far more than possessions. It is about identity, family, memories and the courage to begin another chapter. We are proud to be a leader in senior living and a trusted part of the Wyomissing community. Come see why. You may discover that downsizing is not about making your life smaller. It is about making room for more of the life you still want to live.
